SIX-TIME GRAMMY AWARDS NOMINEE JANELLE MONÁE TO PERFORM AT WEDNESDAY’S ALBANY RALLY TO END STATEWIDE FAILING SCHOOLS CRISIS
AWARD WINNING SINGER AND SONGWRITER MONÁE IS NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED EDUCATION ADVOCATE
Rally to End Statewide Failing Schools Crisis Expected to Have 8,000 Attendees
New York, NY – Families for Excellent Schools announced Monday that six-time Grammy nominee and education advocate Janelle Monáe will perform among 8,000 parents, students, and teachers at Wednesday’s rally in Albany to end New York’s failing schools crisis.
The #DontStealPossible rally on Wednesday, March 4th will call on state leaders to move beyond bureaucratic tweaks and make bold, structural change to end the crisis. More than 80 schools across New York State are expected to attend, along with parents from traditional NYC public schools.
“It’s heartbreaking to know that there are 800,000 New York kids falling through the cracks every year,” said Monáe. “I am honored to stand with families demanding an end to this crisis.”
In July, Monáe was presented with the Jane Ortner Education Award by First Lady Michelle Obama, recognizing an artist’s dedication to education through the arts. Monáe is an award-winning soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and record producer. Her debut studio album, The ArchAndroid, was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B album, and her second album, The Electric Lady, was released in 2013 to critical acclaim. In 2012, Monáe was a guest vocalist in “We Are Young” by Fun, which went on to reach no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and garner nominations for Record of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
The announcement of Monáe’s attendance follows Families for Excellent Schools’ call for a swift state takeover of chronically failing schools, and comes amidst “Ten Days of Possible,” a social media campaign counting down towards next week’s rally in Albany.
