What will we be rallying for?

The rally on Wednesday, March 4th will call on state leaders to move beyond bureaucratic tweaks and make bold, structural change to end the state’s failing schools crisis. Schools with academic rigor, highly engaging teachers, excellent professional development and carefully tracked progress should not be limited to a handful of New York’s children.

On Wednesday, more than 9,000 people and 160 schools will be standing in front of the State Capitol to demand that every child gain access to a high-quality school, district or charter.

How serious is New York’s failing schools crisis?

New York’s failing schools crisis presents the greatest public policy challenge of our generation. Across New York State, hundreds of thousands of students—the vast majority of whom are of color and come from families at or near the poverty line—are trapped in failing schools where 90% or more of students cannot read or do math at grade level or are not college ready.

Across Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers, 6 out of 10 schools are failing 90% of their kids. In Syracuse, there isn’t a single school—not one—where the majority of students can read and do math at grade level. Statewide, almost 800,000 children in grades 3-8 failed proficiency exams last year. That’s almost a million kids slipping through the cracks of our schools.

In short, these school systems are failing monumentally—a level of dysfunction that leaves children with almost no hope of reaching college and excelling professionally. Many of these schools have been failing for decades.
