PUBLIC SCHOOL PARENTS ANNOUNCE OVER 75K SIGNATURES ON PETITION CALLING FOR “REAL CHANGE” TO FIX NYC FAILING SCHOOLS CRISIS

New York, NY – Parents will gather on the steps of City Hall tomorrow to announce over 75,000 signatures on Ebony Burrowes’ petition calling for “real change” to fix New York City’s failing schools crisis. In the petition, Burrowes, a parent of a 9-year-old student at P.S. 306 in Brooklyn–where only one in 10 children can read or do math at grade level–urges all New Yorkers to “send a clear message to our city leaders that they can and must fix this crisis.”

In New York City, 143,000 students are trapped in failing schools where 9 out of 10 students cannot read or do math at grade level. Tomorrow’s press conference follows Families for Excellent Schools’ release of a letter to Governor Cuomo and leaders in the State Legislature to take bold action to solve a statewide failing schools crisis.

Don’t Steal Possible

My 9-year-old son, Davonte, goes to public school in East New York, Brooklyn. At his school, not even 10% of kids passed the state exams. Across our city, there are 143,000 kids trapped in more than 350 schools just like Davonte’s – schools where 9 out of 10 students aren’t learning to read or do math.

My son is full of potential, and his life should be full of possibilities. But the expectations for him are so low at school. Each year, he falls farther and farther behind, and so do his classmates.

These kids aren’t failing — our school system is. New York City’s school system is broken, and there is no real plan to fix it.

We need real change and we need it now. Our children can’t wait.

That is why I’m asking all New Yorkers to stand up for my son, and for all the kids whose dreams are being stolen by broken schools.

Please take a stand. Add your name to our petition. Send a clear message to our city leaders that they can and must fix this crisis.
