On #PathtoPossible Day of Action, Hundreds of NYC Families to Take to Albany and Call for 200,000 Students in Charter Schools by 2020

Assembly Member Marcos Crespo and State Senators Ruben Diaz Sr., Martin J. Golden and Kevin Parker to Speak at Event and Stand with Parent Activists

Albany, NY – On January 18th, hundreds of New York City parents and students will call for 200,000 students in public charter schools by 2020 during the #PathtoPossible Day of Action in Albany. Families whose lives have been transformed by high-quality public charters will bring their powerful stories to Albany, meeting with and urging their state legislators to support the sector’s growth by ensuring charters have equal funding and access to facilities. Elected champions for public charter schools including Assembly Member Marcos Crespo, State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr., State Senator Martin J. Golden and State Senator Kevin Parker will stand with parent activists during this Day of Action, and will speak during a program in the Well of the Legislative Office Building. The program will also feature a panel with parents and advocates on the public charter sector’s impact and promise.

New York City’s public charter schools recently reached the milestone of over 100,000 students served each year, but 44,000 children still remain on charter wait lists and many more are stuck in low-performing city district schools. To give these students the education options they deserve and close the achievement gap between low-income children of color and their peers, the public charter sector is working to double in size. During the #PathtoPossible Day of Action, parents, students, and their elected champions will call on state lawmakers to help make this vision a reality.
