DOZENS OF WAITLISTED PARENTS TO CALL ON ALBANY TO LIFT CHARTER CAP
New York, NY – With the number of families on charter school waiting lists anticipated to reach record levels this year, dozens of parents will gather on the steps of City Hall on Wednesday to call on elected leaders in Albany to lift the charter cap in this year’s legislative session. The charter cap, an arbitrary and discriminatory restriction on the number of high-quality charter schools in low-income communities of color, denies choice to tens of thousands of families across New York City every year.
With substantial changes in education expected this year, including an extension of mayoral control up for debate, parents will call on Albany to guarantee their choice of where to send their child to school–regardless of who occupies City Hall.
WHO: Parents of New York City public school students on charter school waitlists and unable to access their school of choice
WHAT: Press conference calling on Albany to lift statewide charter cap
WHERE: City Hall steps
WHEN: 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 22, 2015
